Commission approves permits, hires, payroll adjustments and bills; schedules budget follow-ups

The commission approved a series of routine but substantive items during its Aug. 5 meeting: a landfill credit-account application for Best Enterprises and Excavation, special-event permits for Oct. 10 (Lawrence Bicycle Club and a larger recreation event at Melbourne/Lackland Lake), and Linden Pride’s fall festival (Oct. 3) and tree-lighting (Dec. 5).

The board approved payroll action forms for sheriff’s-office hires and step increases (names and effective dates recorded in the meeting minutes) and a payroll adjustment in the amount of $352.95 related to a previous run. Commissioners also approved the bills and autopays for a total of $160,804.87 and a separate batch of jury hand checks totaling $2,579.49.

Commissioners discussed budget timetables and asked departments to provide more detailed line-item reductions for personnel, commodities and contractual items so the board can refine proposed mill-levy changes before the Sept. 8 R&R and budget hearing. The chair asked staff to aim for Aug. 18 as a working session to collect department updates and to consider Aug. 25 and Sept. 1 for additional follow-up meetings.

Why it matters: The votes advance routine county operations (permits, payroll and bills) and set a near-term schedule for detailed budget work that will determine whether and how much the mill levy changes for 2027.

What’s next: Staff will gather departmental line-item detail and present revised numbers for the Aug. 18 session, with a view to having firmer figures for the Sept. 8 public hearing.
