Chief Deputy Martha Smith asks court to consider using SB 22 funds to raise sheriff-related pay

Chief Deputy Martha Smith of the Grimes County Sheriff's Office spoke during the public hearing to thank the court for positions allotted in the budget process and to raise a pay-structure concern. Smith told the court she had expected to be able to discuss the sheriff’s salary at this hearing and asked that the court consider changing pay so the sheriff would make more than the chief deputy.
"I was requesting that we use SB 22 funds to increase our share of salary to make more than I make," Chief Deputy Martha Smith said, asking the court to consider the adjustment during subsequent budget discussions. She closed her remarks by thanking the court and the auditor’s office for their work during the budget process.
