Seguin ISD board declines to adopt Commissioner's recommended appraisal process for superintendent

On Jan. 15 the Seguin ISD Board of Trustees voted 6-1 against a motion to adopt the Texas Commissioner of Education's recommended appraisal process for Superintendent Dr. Veronica Vijil and asked for an updated evaluation instrument before acting at the Jan. 21 regular meeting.
The Seguin Independent School District Board of Trustees on Jan. 15 considered a motion to adopt the Commissioner of Education's recommended appraisal process and criteria for evaluating Superintendent Dr. Veronica Vijil but the motion failed in a 6-1 vote.
"Mrs. Burns moved, seconded by Mr. Dwyer to approve the Commissioner of Education's recommended appraisal process, and criteria, as stated in option 1 of Board policy BJCD(LEGAL) for Dr. Vijil's evaluation." The motion drew a single aye from Trustee Lisa Burns; Trustees Joshua Bright, Denise Crettenden, Linda Duncan, William Dwyer, Alejandro R. Guerra and Grace Mueller voted no. Because a majority voted against the motion, the board did not adopt the Commissioner's recommended instrument.
Board members said they wanted the most recent revisions incorporated before taking final action. The minutes record that the board requested the updated Superintendent's Evaluation Instrument be provided with the most recent changes and that the board will take action at its regular meeting on Jan. 21, 2025.
Procedurally, the board recessed for closed-session legal consultation earlier in the meeting and reconvened before the vote. The motion and its vote were recorded in the minutes; no further formal action on the instrument was taken at the Jan. 15 special meeting.
