Judge Chuck McClain told the court the legislature increased bond requirements for judges handling guardianships and that he had identified an insurance alternative through the Texas Lawyer Insurance Exchange (TLI) that would provide a $1,000,000 policy covering acts of negligence countywide. He asked the court to amend the FY2026 budget to include $1,500 to pay for the policy this fiscal year and indicated he would return next week for formal approval to place a policy into effect by Friday if possible.
County staff discussed alternatives — including obtaining a rider to increase the judge's existing bond through the bond provider — and the auditor recommended including the $1,500 in the budget changes package the court planned to adopt. The court agreed to include the requested amount in the set of budget C changes for FY2026.
