Emergency management recounts transformer fire and schedules hazmat exercises; recommends no burn ban change

Dion Bumpus, Grimes County Emergency Management Services coordinator, briefed the commissioners on two recent incidents and several upcoming preparedness activities and recommended the court keep the current burn ban status unchanged.
Bumpus said on Aug. 24 a hazardous-materials report at a County Road 166 solar-farm site turned out to be a transformer fire; crews waited for de-energization and there was no public threat. She also described a structure/storage fire near Houston Circle that required local VFDs and assistance from neighboring fire marshals. Bumpus detailed upcoming readiness events: an Oct. 21 LEPC hazmat tabletop, a Nov. 1–2 CERT academy to rebuild volunteer response capacity, and a Nov. 8 full-scale LEPC hazmat exercise.
Asked specifically about agenda item 27, the burn ban, Bumpus said she had no recommendation to change it at this time; the court took no action on the burn ban. Bumpus noted work with the BVCOG on a threat assessment report and ongoing coordination with local volunteer fire departments and the Brazos River Authority.
