Maybrook police report swatting cases, an arson investigation and increased enforcement

Chief Dennis Barnett told the board the village experienced three swatting incidents in the past month where callers provided a resident's name and address and falsely reported violent crimes; officers responded to each and the Rhode Island State Police are building a case against the caller(s). "Swatting means a person would call the police saying that someone's getting murdered inside your house," Barnett said.
The chief also described an arson on Galaxy property; investigators from an ATF Arson Task Force and a county fire investigator linked a lighter found at the scene to a juvenile. Because of the Raise‑the‑Age law, the two juveniles may be referred to Child Protective Services rather than charged as adults. Barnett thanked outside investigators and noted the arrests and other drug enforcement activity; he also said officers are increasing traffic stops and previewed a community outreach event: "coffee with the Chief" at the Mainline Diner on a Sunday to be scheduled.
No formal board action was taken on public‑safety items at the meeting; the chief said the village will continue to coordinate with outside law‑enforcement partners on ongoing investigations.
