Parks update: Plum Point Bridge timeline, Camp LaGuardia cleanup and Brick House Museum evaluation

The Parks Department provided several project updates to the Physical Services Committee. Staff said the Plum Point Bridge repairs must proceed through permits, an RFP for design, bidding and coordination with CSX if necessary, and that construction is expected next year if permitting and contracts proceed without complication. Camp LaGuardia demolition of the main buildings is largely complete; a smaller building near the Heritage Trail and a maintenance garage remain and staff plan an RFP to determine whether to rehabilitate or replace the garage.

"Right now, there remains a building that is near the Heritage Trail, which is a much smaller building. I believe that will come down, as well. There is a large maintenance garage, which they are doing an RFP to see if they can evaluate if structurally it makes sense to rehab it or construct a new facility there," Mr. Ewald said. Staff also reported trail work to open the Schunnemunk Trail later this year and described parking and phased development plans for Camp LaGuardia, including future parking for a dog park and expanded Heritage Trail access.

Committee members asked whether the county tracks park users by residency; Parks staff noted that only golf has resident-verified memberships and that tracking other users is difficult without third-party cell‑phone analytics. The committee also heard that the Ruth Ottaway Education Center exterior improvements should be finished this fall before the 9/11 ceremony.
