Chemung assessor reports new-home construction and industrial interest amid lower sales volume

Township Assessor John Killeen told the Chemung Township board on Oct. 22 that although sales volume is down from a year earlier, sale prices are holding steady and “slowly rise.”
Killeen said 13 new homes are under construction in the township — including six duplexes — and four recently completed houses have been added to the assessment rolls. He added that a baby-food manufacturer is moving forward with plans to build in the township Industrial Park and that a residential developer is preparing preliminary plans for property on Lonesome Road near the entrance to Oak Grove Estates.
Killeen reminded residents that appeals apply to assessed values, not tax bills, and noted the township’s appeal season has closed with the Board of Review issuing a final decision on the Deans property. “You cannot appeal your tax bill; we can ensure your assessment is correct,” he said.
The presentation did not include dollar figures for the Industrial Park project or a timeline for the Lonesome Road development; Killeen encouraged residents with questions about assessed value to contact the assessor’s office.
