Florence board approves travel and training for police and public works staff

Alderman Banks moved, and Alderman Herrin seconded, approval to send Chief Brad Burns to the Mississippi Association of Chiefs of Police summer conference in Biloxi June 16–19, 2026, with the city covering a $275 registration fee and related allowable costs. The board voted unanimously to approve the travel. The board also approved sending Public Works Operator Billy Russell and maintenance worker Ethan Peden to the Mississippi Rural Water Association Backflow Prevention Certification class in Pearl August 17–20, 2026, with registration fees of $550 each, and approved Russell's attendance at the MRWA Annual Management & Technical Conference in Biloxi May 26–29, 2026, with a $300 registration fee paid by the city.
In separate motions, the board unanimously authorized travel to the Summer MACE Educational Conference in Biloxi August 11–14, 2026 for Mayor Assistant/Police Officer Richard Thomas and for Community Development Director Joel Sims; each trip carries a $200 registration fee to be paid by the city. All motions carried by unanimous vote with the five-member board present.
