The Kingsburg Board of Education reviewed a tentative 2026–27 budget and identified rising employee health‑benefit and utility costs as the primary fiscal pressures.
"With the health care rising, for the 2nd year in a row, looking at a 35% increase is always a challenge," a board presenter said while outlining how the district plans to use reserves and adjustments to reduce taxpayer impact. The presenter also said the draft budget would result in "about $218 for the year or $18 a month" for the average home, because of increases in assessed home values.
Board members and staff described a calendaring mismatch that complicates planning: the district budgets on one schedule while the State Health Benefits program renews on a calendar year. Staff said they monitor claims monthly, work with a broker and, when possible, seek competitive bids to contain costs. The board asked the public to attend a full budget presentation on April 28 if county review is returned in time.
Why it matters: rising health and utility costs are compressing local school budgets statewide; the board said it was trying to minimize tax impact by using reserves and targeted adjustments while preserving programs and services. The board emphasized the budget remains tentative and that additional details will be presented at the April meeting.
