Collier said two of the food bank's direct-service programs are Backpacks for Friday, which provides weekend food bags for schoolchildren, and mobile food pantries that allow additional distributions in communities needing more assistance. "Volunteers are so important to our work," she said, highlighting that groups such as "Cape Central's football team" were helping to pack supplies at the event.
Coach Gibbs, identified as head football coach at Cape Central, described the team's participation: "We're here today at the food bank, putting some boxes together, packing some, backpacks, so to speak." Gibbs said the work is a way for players to "give back to the community" that supports them during the school year.
