Police Chief Ryan Layman said 11 or 12 trees were cut down on Village property near Stop 40 and told the council he had "sent out an alert already pertaining to vandalism." The council asked residents to come forward and report any information to the police and requested that the Village notify an arborist, EGLE and Chikaming Open Lands so the trees can be appraised and environmental protections reviewed.
Chief Layman framed the incident as an act of vandalism on Village property in the Critical Dune area; the Council and staff discussed notifying partners to determine environmental and restoration steps. No suspects were named in the meeting, and the Chief asked residents who were in the area Friday early afternoon to contact the department with any observations.
