Mesquite ISD Education Foundation awards record $326,000 in campus grants

Randy Llewellyn, executive director of the Mesquite ISD Education Foundation, announced that the foundation funded "close to 50 campus and innovation grants, totaling a record $326,000 funded by the foundation this year." He said the foundation has invested "over $5,000,000 to fund campus and innovation grants all across the district" since 2004.
Several presenters described how grant-funded projects will operate in classrooms. One presenter said, "With the grant, we plan to use it for our United Cafe Club and cart. We make tea, cafe, coffee. Lemonade." Another presenter described a goal-setting component tied to baseline data and attendance tracking, saying, "We just know that attendance is linked very, very highly with academic growth." A separate presenter outlined a weekly running program that will buy lanyards and tokens to let students scan and monitor miles and effort, and another said the child development program will receive interactive "babies" that connect to phones for hands-on learning.
The foundation said these grants support teacher-led ideas that fall outside the state budget. Llewellyn encouraged employees and supporters to consider contributing to the foundation to allow similar projects in future years. The foundation's board reviews proposals year-round and distributes funds to campus and innovation requests.
