Council members closed the truth-in-taxation public hearing on Aug. 4 without taking formal action and directed staff to include the public comments in the record for a final discussion and vote scheduled for Aug. 18 at 6 p.m.
"No action will be taken tonight on the final budget. Council will consider the public comments heard tonight. There will be a council meeting on August 18 at 6PM here at City Hall for a final discussion and decision on the final budget," Tom stated when reminding attendees of next steps. The meeting concluded after a motion to adjourn was made, seconded, and approved by voice vote.
Council discussion at the hearing included staff remarks that alternatives—such as establishing a municipal police department—would be far costlier (one council member cited a $3–$5 million estimate), and that the proposed tax change is intended to meet a higher contracted charge from Weber County rather than to expand services beyond the contract.
