Glynn County Schools report chronic absenteeism down to 15% districtwide, below state average

Miss Haywood presented the district's chronic absenteeism update and said Glynn County Schools has reduced its rate from a pandemic high of 29% in 2022 to 15% in 2026. "Following a pandemic high of 29 percent in 2022... the district has steadily reduced the chronic absenteeism rate to 15 percent in 2026," she said, and noted the district's rate now sits below the reported state average of 17.7%.
Haywood described a mix of strategies that district schools used to reduce absences, including earlier monitoring of students showing warning signs, attendance review teams at each school, individualized attendance support plans, increased family engagement, connections to counseling and social workers, transportation added for some programs and ESE telehealth supports. Board members asked for a school-by-school breakdown and whether suspensions were driving the metric; Haywood said school-level percentages are available on the Georgia Department of Education's Georgia Insights attendance dashboard and agreed that separating suspensions from other absences could help clarify root causes.
