During a brief public hearing on Proposed Local Law No. 3 of 2026, Legislator Lockwood asked Sheriff Cook for an update on the jail population. "The current count is 79 individuals," Sheriff Cook responded, giving legislators a snapshot of in-custody numbers as the Legislature met about the proposed salary measure.
Sheriff Cook added context about facility capacity, saying the jail "houses 125 beds but comfortably could house 100 individuals." No members of the public addressed the Legislature during the hearing, and Chairman Gregory Janisewski adjourned the public hearing at 10:49 a.m.
