Coppell council debates proposed rec‑center cuts and $168,000 in personnel savings

City staff recommended a package of service adjustments that includes eliminating a recreation coordinator position and reducing late-night rec‑center hours from 10 p.m. to 8 p.m., along with changes to the Sunshine Room and some adult programs. Council members expressed concern about immediate community impacts and asked staff for utilization and head-count data to justify the proposed hours reductions. One staff member cautioned, "If you choose not to make those changes I'm telling you there will be a price to pay in 2029," framing the recommendations as part of a multi-year fiscal plan. Elected officials discussed alternatives such as a modest membership fee increase, part‑time coverage for a few hours, or rolling the issue into a January prioritization exercise; staff said any specific budget amendments would be brought back for a formal vote on Sept. 8.
