Burke County proclaims September 2026 as National Recovery Month

Burke County commissioners unanimously approved a proclamation Aug. 6 recognizing September 2026 as National Recovery Month and encouraging increased awareness, prevention and access to treatment.
Dorian Kershner, drug‑free communities coordinator for Burke Recovery, read the county proclamation and highlighted local overdose trends and the need for treatment and prevention. "So today, I'm gonna be reading the proclamation declaring September 2026 as National Recovery Month for City Of Morganton," Kershner said, noting a community observation event scheduled for Sept. 5 at Catawba Meadows Park from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The proclamation urges residents, schools, businesses and agencies to support awareness efforts and highlights the role of local partners such as the Burke Wellness Initiative and Burke Substance Abuse Network. The board approved Proclamation No. 2026‑10 by unanimous vote.
