Monroe council approves membership in Wisconsin Local Government Climate Coalition after spirited debate

Administrator Rindy, who presented the item, told the council membership is a no‑cost resource and does not obligate the city to adopt specific initiatives: "With being a part of this, we are not, forced to do anything," Rindy said, adding the coalition can provide briefings, grant information and technical assistance. Opponents warned membership could lead to mandates or extra requirements for local developers. One council member stated, "I will be continuing to vote no for this because I'm not gonna retire fossil fuels because that closes most of the businesses right out these front doors," citing concerns about economic impact and state mandates.
Supporters said the coalition offers knowledge and tools the city can choose to use or ignore and emphasized the membership is voluntary and informational. After the resolution was read and moved, the council approved the membership on roll call; the minutes record a mix of ayes and nos before the measure passed.
