NDOT reviews rural engagement and lists $103M in upcoming projects for Elko area

She said the agency identified 14 needs from last year's county workshop and highlighted completed preservation and paving work, shoulder and chip‑seal projects, and a planned statewide improvement program with about $103.2 million in projects through 2027.
Larkin Thomason discussed a legal requirement to meet rural communities and noted NDOT will hire a rural communications specialist to improve local engagement. Commissioners pressed NDOT on passing‑lane locations on US‑93 and potential wildlife crossings; district staff said identified passing‑lane locations will be brought back to the county for review and that funding constraints affect timing. "We are the 5th, fastest growing state in the nation," Larkin Thomason said, framing demand pressures on the system.
