Board addresses emergency cupola removal; Chamber cancels long-running craft fair

Town staff told the Select Board on Aug. 6 that structural concerns with the municipal building’s cupola require a careful removal plan and have prompted immediate closures of some public areas.
Maria Ryan said, "the parking lots are closed and the bathrooms are closed, and the 2 end doors are open for daily business." A staff member reported that "Matt Colmer, our building inspector, has taken the lead while I'm out of town," and that the structural engineer and contractor met to develop plans to secure and lift the cupola off the building.
Because of the cupola work, the Stockbridge Chamber of Commerce decided to cancel its long-running arts and crafts fair this year. Board members read messages received by Barbara Zanetti, the director of the Stockbridge Chamber of Commerce; one message read, "This is so sad. I'm sorry that you had to cancel, but understand the reason." Speakers expressed disappointment and pledged support for returning the fair to the town green next year.
Staff said they placed a porta-potty near the police department and will provide ADA accommodations as needed; the board and staff agreed to finalize signage and coordinate with police on access while work proceeds. The town will circulate further details as the removal plan is finalized with the engineer and contractor.
