Sheriff secures radio units; county may pay monthly service starting next fiscal year

County Manager Thomas Weaver told commissioners at the March 3 meeting that the sheriff secured an arrangement with a vendor for radios and a grant that would provide units without upfront purchase cost; the county would be responsible only for monthly service fees beginning in the next fiscal year.
Weaver said the original estimated hardware cost had been around $78,000, but the sheriff located a solution involving 10 Harris units provided with no capital cost; the county's obligation would be ongoing monthly service estimated at $300 per month. The manager said the county has 30–60 days to accept the arrangement and that the service would not start until the next fiscal year. Chairman Coffey praised the sheriff for finding funding, and commissioners were asked to sign a support letter to pursue the agreement.
The commission did not take a final procurement vote at the March 3 session; staff will present any final agreement and associated fiscal impact for a formal vote in a future meeting.
