Dr. Freeman outlines proposed student cell phone policy; committee to review in July

Dr. Freeman, a WCHS administrator, told the Washington CHSD 308 Policy Committee on June 10 that the district currently has no formal cell phone policy and presented proposed handbook verbiage for committee review.
He said the draft would require students to keep phones out of sight during class unless a teacher permits use for an academic reason and that teachers may require use of a pouch system. Dr. Freeman noted a faculty survey has been circulated and said the district will educate families and staff if the policy is approved. "He stated he would draft up the cell phone policy and have the committee and admin review," the minutes record.
Committee members and administrators discussed equity and device access: not all students have cell phones, and Chromebooks are available for students who need devices. The committee also discussed email as a student communication tool and the permitted use of headphones or earphones in classroom settings.
As a procedural next step, Dr. Freeman said he will prepare formal policy language and submit it to the committee and administration; the item was scheduled to be added to the student handbook agenda for the July policy committee meeting.
