Council member Melton recognized the Tenant Assistance Project (TAP) with a proclamation marking August 2026 as Tenant Assistance Project Month in Omaha, praising the volunteer attorneys, law students and partner organizations that support the program.
"Since its launch in Omaha in 2021, the Tenant Assistance Project... has helped more than 12,000 residents navigate housing instability and eviction related legal issues," Melton read from the proclamation. Josh Henningsen, identified as TAP’s managing attorney, told the council TAP now prevents same-day evictions in more than 99% of cases it handles and credited partnerships with Legal Aid of Nebraska, the Creighton Legal Clinic and other local organizations. He asked the council and the community to continue supporting volunteer attorneys and law students who provide courtroom representation and intake services.
Melton and TAP representatives emphasized TAP’s demographics and impact on families, noting the program's role in reducing eviction records and supporting children indirectly through family stabilization. The proclamation urged residents to celebrate the program and thanked long-term volunteers for courtroom and outreach work.
