Commissioners proclaim National Recovery Month and NCDOT Litter Sweep Week

At the start of the Aug. 6 meeting the board approved two proclamations: one from Burke Recovery declaring September 2026 National Recovery Month in Morganton/Burke County and another supporting the North Carolina Department of Transportation's litter sweep week (Sept. 12–26, 2026).
Doreen Kershner, drug‑free communities coordinator at Burke Recovery, read the proclamation and highlighted local overdose and treatment gaps, and an awareness event planned for Sept. 5 at Catawba Meadows Park. The board approved proclamation No. 2026‑10 by motion and took a commemorative photo. Later the board approved the NCDOT litter sweep proclamation praising environmental stewardship and encouraging volunteer cleanups along county roadways.
Both proclamations were approved by unanimous voice/hand votes (4-0). County staff encouraged residents and groups to use the county website to find volunteer opportunities and to contact Parks & Rec about logistical support for cleanup events.
