BLM warns of wild-horse water shortages; agency has requested a gather

Brady Owens, assistant field manager for the Wells Field Office, told the Natural Resource Management Commission that several spring complexes are failing and that range animals are suffering. "We are having some horses die," Owens said, describing poor body condition in horses from Woodhills down to Mavericks near the refuge and similar reports from White Pine.
Owens said the cause may be a mix of supply (reduced spring flow) and demand (an abundance of animals) and that local BLM staff have put in requests to address the issue. He said decisions about gathers and large-scale responses are handled higher in the organization and that the office is monitoring the situation while updating memos. The commission did not take formal action at the meeting.
