A board member raised concerns about rising employer costs for CalPERS retirement and health insurance and asked for a future agenda item to engage with the CalPERS board. "Can we get an item that comes back that we can discuss somehow, the CalPERS rates that for health insurance, retirement?" the board member asked, noting that family health insurance can amount to "36,000 dollars a year for a family" and that the county should consider providing direction to CalPERS.
Angela Davis, the county administrator, responded that staff will schedule the item. "We'll have that scheduled," she said. Board members and staff indicated they want a staff report that clarifies the county's current unfunded obligations, how CalPERS rate changes affect county budgets, and options for board direction or engagement with CalPERS.
