Commissioners discussed the LAFCO draft budget item for training and expressed divergent views on sending a single commissioner to statewide conferences versus organizing in-house training that would benefit all members.
One commissioner said the commission could get more value by bringing in in-house training for the board rather than sending one person to a conference. Another commissioner and staff noted the state association (referred to in the packet as CALAFCO) is undergoing restructuring, and some larger counties have paused or not renewed membership; staff said regional representatives continue to meet to address governance and membership issues.
Commissioners asked staff to consider training options that deliver the most benefit for the budgeted amount and to return with proposals at the next meeting. The commission scheduled its next meeting for May 12 at 9 a.m.
