Commissioners agree to sign letter supporting Horseshoe Canyon land-acquisition LWCF application

Tim Leahy, a Forest Service ranger, asked the council to provide a letter of support for a federal Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) application to acquire roughly 570 acres adjacent to Beaverhead National Forest. He said the application is nationally competed and requested the county letter by Sept. 1.
A landowner who spoke with the Forest Service described existing public access at the Woodville exit and said the property includes roughly six miles of trails and roads that would provide recreational opportunities including hiking and hunting. Commissioner Morgan moved to concur with the communication and allow the chairman to sign the letter; the motion and a 12–0 vote followed.
The council’s concurrence does not itself bind federal funding but provides local government endorsement the Forest Service said strengthens the application for LWCF funding, which aims to keep significant parcels in public ownership for recreation and habitat protection.
