Henry County sheriff says office will not renew Flock Safety LPR contract

Sheriff Aaron Brown told commissioners the Henry County Sheriff's Office will not renew its contract with Flock Safety when the current agreement expires on March 11, 2027. He said the office's five-month trial produced investigative results but that unresolved questions about who controls and can access the data weigh against renewal.

"After considering all of those factors together, we have decided that the Henry County sheriff's office will not renew its contract with with flock safety when our current agreement expires 03/11/2027," Sheriff Aaron Brown said. He added that the decision "should not be viewed as criticism of flock safety or the technology itself," and that the system has helped in local investigations.

Brown framed the choice as balancing public safety benefits against constitutional rights and public trust. He repeatedly described the back end's third-party data storage as the key problem: the county owns the cameras but the collected data sits on a private server that the sheriff said he cannot independently audit or control. Brown said the office is working with the state on options, including moving to in-house storage or alternative vendors, while avoiding jeopardizing grant funds tied to the current deployment.
