Novi lays out multi-step proposal process for core curriculum materials and required review team

Staff reviewed the Core Curriculum Materials Proposal Process the committee will use when considering new core instructional materials. The process distinguishes core materials (required for each student) from non-core supplemental resources and requires a review team, material-evaluation tables, and an attached PDF of the evaluation for board consideration.

"Identify at least 3 resources to consider for adoption and detail them in the Core Curriculum Materials Proposal Form," the presentation directed. The district requires a minimum of three similar resources be evaluated (except in special circumstances), and it asks review teams to complete evaluation tables that score each resource against criteria such as alignment to standards, appropriateness for age range, evidence of best practice, representation and accessibility.

Steps in the process include forming a review team (lead, educators, admin, and tech rep), documenting material information, completing material-evaluation tables, making a recommendation, and then, after TLD review and board approval, completing the Purchase Request form with a vendor quote. Timelines for submitting course proposals and materials for board review were also provided, with typical board consideration occurring between March and December depending on submission date.

The committee reviewed the procedural guidance; no vote was recorded. Staff said the Teaching and Learning Department will review proposals and forward approved recommendations to the board for final action.
