Novi committee advances K–4 literacy pilot, plans summer purchases and book-room overhaul

Teaching and Learning staff told the Joint DEI/Curriculum Committee on June 2 that the district will continue its Wildcat Launch K–4 pilot into a second year while exploring Bridges in Mathematics for comparison in classroom math.
"We have begun purchasing supplementary materials with the remaining 35J funds," the presenter said, adding that purchases will be organized and distributed through the summer. Staff reported 25 job-embedded professional-development sessions and nearly 40 hours of training delivered in April and May to K–4 teams, interventionists and ELD staff.
The presentation described specific resource work by grade band: K–2 decodables; third-grade Geodes and text-set design for grades 3–4; and book-room reorganization planned for summer to create foundational and knowledge-building bins aligned with the science of reading. Teacher leaders are being trained to use assessments tied to Really Great Reading and Wit & Wisdom, and the district plans Tier 2 supports and classroom-level assessment materials for students struggling with literacy development.
Staff said purchases are already underway and summer work will focus on distribution and book-room setup so teachers can access materials before the 2025–26 school year. The committee did not take a formal vote; staff described next steps for continuing the pilot and further teacher supports for fall implementation.
