Lucas council adopts 2024 building codes, keeps 2003 fire-suppression ordinance

The Lucas City Council voted Sept. 18 to adopt the 2024 international family of codes and the 2023 National Electrical Code with North Texas Council of Governments amendments. Development Services Director Joe Hilburn told the council the package updates the city's code baseline while preserving the city's existing fire suppression ordinance tied to the 2003 international residential code.
Hilburn noted the one change members previously requested—permitting 10-foot fences around sports courts—and clarified that such fences would not fall under the city’s 50% opacity rule because sports courts are required to be inside the building setback line. He also explained state restrictions on updating fire suppression ordinances: the state limited cities’ ability to adopt such ordinances after Sept. 1, 2009, and the city prefers to keep its existing ordinance. A councilmember moved to adopt ordinances 1 through 11 as presented; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote.
