Commission authorizes $1.64 million rooftop communications site to bolster downtown radio coverage

The Macon-Bibb County Commission authorized a $1,635,721.82 professional services agreement with Williams Communication Inc. to construct a rooftop communications site at Atrium Health Navicent. County staff and sponsoring commissioners said the downtown rooftop will strengthen coverage gaps in the radio system and act as backup to three existing towers.
County Manager Keith Moffett explained the location will help public-safety communications in the downtown area: "This tower being in downtown will help strengthen the gaps that we have when we have the network. It'll strengthen the network in the downtown area and be the backup for the other towers," he said. Commissioner Kato questioned whether the site will serve only the hospital or county systems; staff responded that it is sited for Macon‑Bibb County public-safety benefit and the county is using the building to achieve better height and coverage. The motion carried and the resolution was sent to the consent agenda.
