Treasurer Daniel J. Talarek told the Lorain County Investment Advisory Committee on May 26 that the county recorded $2,443,068.55 in interest earnings for the first quarter of fiscal year 2026. The Treasurer distributed detailed reports showing Depository Investment earnings of $290,475.18; Star Ohio earnings of $60,554.56; Custodial Account/US Bank earnings of $2,090,130.17; and Star J.C.P. earnings of $1,908.64.
Talarek said the comparable total at the same point last year was $1,801,965.73 and reported that the county treasury holds roughly $40 million less than a year ago because of liquidity needs. He also reported that Star Ohio is yielding 3.87 percent. Auditor Craig Snodgrass and Commissioner Jeff Riddell asked for more historical context; Riddell requested an annual report covering the last three to four years of interest earnings, and Auditor Snodgrass said those reports are provided to the commissioners' fiscal director but that he would send the requested report to the commissioners.
The figures the Treasurer presented are composed of several cash and custodial accounts and do not reflect decisions about individual investments that may be maturing. The committee did not take formal action on investment allocations at the meeting; in a public comment exchange Commissioner Jeff Riddell asked who is making decisions about investments coming due, and Treasurer Talarek replied that he is making those decisions for now.
