Prince George's County work group adopts 18-point school pedestrian-safety report

The Prince George's County School Pedestrian Safety Work Group voted to approve an 18-recommendation final report aimed at improving safety for students who walk to school. Chair said the group would incorporate public comments and make final edits before sending the report to the county council chair for possible presentation to the full council.
"I'm really, really excited to have concrete steps that all of us ... that we can go back, with thoughtful, researched, and, and fully, fleshed out recommendations to improve our schools," the Chair said, thanking student members and agency staff. The group moved, seconded and carried the motion to adopt the final recommendations as a package.
The document packages measures ranging from a proposed pedestrian-safety scoring system to recommendations about jurisdictional roles—such as county and municipal responsibilities for traffic calming—and steps to improve crossing-guard coverage through municipal partnerships. Members emphasized that many recommendations will require cooperation among county departments, municipalities and the school system as they enter the next budget cycle.
The work group asked staff to notify members when the report is transferred to the chair of the county council and to follow up on how it will be presented. A committee member noted the group expects implementation work to continue in January and through the upcoming budget process.
