Board renews Red Key contract; staff say route changes avoided about $500,000 in extra costs

Staff said the contract would have been about $1,000,000 but route changes and in-house routing adjustments reduced the additional cost by about $500,000.
Trustees asked whether the district had bid the work or explored buying vans and hiring drivers to return services in-house. Staff said bringing services in-house could reduce long-term costs but requires capital outlay for vehicles and drivers; they also noted an upcoming later high-school start time that will affect future route design. "This contract was gonna be about 1000000 dollars...And, obviously, if we're already running them, it's just part of our normal transportation cost versus that additional cost," a board member said, noting the savings achieved this year.
