Sheriff: West Grand schools, Kremmling will jointly fund a school resource officer

The Grand County Board of County Commissioners approved a memorandum of understanding to formalize a school resource officer (SRO) for West Grand School District, Sheriff Brett Shortland (speaker 12) told the board.
Shortland said the town of Kremmling and West Grand School District will each contribute $30,000 per year for the SRO position, providing $60,000 toward salary. "He remains a sheriff's office County County employee," Shortland said, adding the officer will be post-certified and used for other county functions as needed during school breaks or emergencies.
Commissioners asked whether multiple officers will be available when the SRO is on vacation; Shortland said the goal is to keep one trained officer in the schools and to supplement with patrol coverage when necessary. The sheriff said this was not a new position but a reassignment from patrol into schools.
The board approved the agreement and authorized the chair to sign. Commissioners and the sheriff described the program as an important student safety and mentorship resource.
