Residents urge continued sheriff funding and greater transparency at Hernando County budget hearing

Multiple residents and former law-enforcement officers urged the board to maintain or increase funding for the Hernando County Sheriff's Office during the county's final budget hearing.

Joe Wolfs, a Spring Hill resident and retired police lieutenant, told the board: "you always promise that you'll never defund the police," and urged commissioners to reconsider any across-the-board cuts. Several other commenters with law‑enforcement backgrounds — including Frank Sperocco and Joshua Rodriguez — said increasing population and calls for service require more deputies and enhanced retention measures.

At the same time, some residents sought transparency about how sheriff funds are spent. Kelly Dodson said residents "want to know where it's going" and urged the sheriff and county to publish clearer accounting. Sheriff Aldine, speaking for the office, said the department expects roughly $222,000 earmarked for the animal shelter and about $1 million more related to renegotiated inmate contracts; he suggested much of that revenue is restricted to specific uses rather than general‑fund operations.

County officials and several commissioners acknowledged the public-safety arguments while reiterating constraints around unfunded state mandates and capital costs. Commissioners asked staff and the sheriff to continue negotiating on specific expenditures and to provide requested line-item detail in follow‑up reports.
