Parent Yuri Torres told the board that an overnight experience at Edna Beatty Elementary — a longstanding student event — was discontinued without meaningful community engagement. Torres said the experience helped students build independence and relationships and asked the board to consider a district expectation that families be consulted before permanently discontinuing long‑standing student traditions.
"For many families, this overnight experience represented a milestone that students looked forward to throughout their elementary years," Torres said, and asked the board not to decide on a single school's program change without considering a districtwide expectation for family engagement. Torres said families are willing to volunteer to problem‑solve and support solutions when opportunities matter to students.
The board received the comment during public comment and did not act on it at the meeting; Torres requested the board consider whether the district has a formal expectation to engage families before ending established programs.
