Committee presses for data on discipline, referrals and school improvement plans

Committee members emphasized that recommendations must be driven by detailed data rather than anecdote. Leslie Irvin, a 28‑year teacher, said the committee should review attendance, discipline referrals, suspensions/expulsions and demographic breakdowns to identify where supports are needed. “Data is absolutely where we need to be driving,” Irvin said when she described school improvement plans and Title I budgeting as mechanisms that target interventions.
Members noted substantial variance across the system: one member said each of the four high schools processed more than 1,000 referrals last year while some elementary schools recorded fewer than 20. Committee participants agreed the group should obtain aggregate, non‑identifiable survey and referral data by school and subgroup so it can recommend targeted interventions without violating student privacy laws. The committee asked staff to determine what public datasets and community survey results are available for analysis and to return with a recommended data set at the next meeting.
