Shawnee superintendent announces $40,000 Safe Schools grant and new Yonder-bag policy for home events

Dr. James, superintendent of Shawnee Public Schools, told the board the district was selected for an OEQA Safe Schools Grant and that the award exceeded initial expectations: "they came back and offered right at $40,000." The superintendent described a new stadium bag policy for home events: approved bags may hold a phone and will be subject to search; backpacks will not be allowed; medical exemptions will be provided for necessary medical bags and unusual items (such as camera bags) must be cleared at the high school in advance. On event logistics, Dr. James said kick-off activities will not be held at the Sept. 5 home opener because of screening lines and recommended attendees arrive about 15 minutes early. Training for staff on bag procedures will accompany the rollout.
