Board hears discipline decline and expansion of crisis-intervention training

According to the minutes, discipline referrals decreased from 424 in 2023–24 to 304 in 2024–25, with VADIR-reportable incidents going from 11 to 5. Dr. Love said this trend “reflects a big shift on how student’s behavior is changing based on the work the teachers are doing” and described an administrative approach that emphasizes working with the whole student.
Coordinator C. Cornwell reported four staff completed week-long Therapeutic Crisis Intervention training to help prevent and de-escalate crisis situations and the District plans to expand training so those staff can provide turnkey instruction to colleagues. Board members asked how referrals are generated (teachers, administrators, bus drivers or staff) and were told it varies by incident severity and case-by-case investigation.
