Student and parents press Barker board to add boys soccer after petition

Parker Johnson, identified in the minutes as an 8th grader, told the board he has played soccer “as long as [he] could remember” and said he would not play another fall sport if boys soccer were unavailable. Parent and community representative Danielle Lefever presented counts she compiled and cited Title IX comparisons. Lefever told the board there are 47 boys in middle school and 31 boys in grades 7–12 who expressed interest and said “24 of 31 who chose soccer as their preferred sport, would not participate in a sport this Fall given the options available.”
Board members asked procedural questions and told speakers the District is not prepared to add a boys soccer program for this fall; they said the administration will continue to evaluate the request. Mr. Atwater acknowledged receipt of a petition and said the names of minor students submitted would not be shared publicly. The record shows no formal motion to create the program at this meeting.
