Lorain County proclaims May 2026 Foster Parent Month; agency urges more foster families

The Lorain County Board of Commissioners on May 8 proclaimed May 2026 as Foster Parent Month and recognized longtime foster parent Diane Austin.
Kris Ross, Family Based Care Manager for Lorain County Children Services, told the board the agency is “grateful to have at our agency 122 foster parents with 58 as traditional foster parents and 64 of them are relative licensed foster parents.” Ross said that in 2025, 368 children entered care and many were placed outside Lorain County; the agency remains focused on recruiting additional foster families. The board paused to take a photo after Commissioner Jeff Riddell read the formal proclamation.
Ross described the vetting process for foster families — months of training, background checks and home studies — and said foster families provide stability and safety during difficult times for children. The proclamation cites national and local statistics and directs county recognition of National Foster Care Month in May 2026.
