Students and administration debate which cords, tassels and medals should be allowed at graduation
Summary
Student Council and Principal Dr. Love reviewed proposals for which cords, tassels and medals seniors may wear at graduation; the Board deferred a final decision to March and asked for a summary to be included in the Friday letter.
Dr. M. Love reported that Student Council discussed what items graduates should be permitted to wear at commencement and outlined which recognitions students thought appropriate. Student Council members said that the National Honor Society sash and the top-ten gold cord should be permitted; they recommended a blue cord for students who participated in at least one extracurricular activity in grades 9–12 and indicated BOCES striped cords and tassels should be allowed as they are earned through the BOCES program.
The students "felt the 'LYNC' (Leadership for the Youth of Niagara Communities) cord should also be an option to wear," Love said, and they supported allowing military recognition for students enlisted to join the military directly after graduation. The student group suggested cultural items be considered on a case-by-case basis by Advisory and Administration.
Because not all Board members were present, Mr. R. Atwater asked to continue the discussion at the March meeting and requested student representatives and senior-class advisory attend. He also asked that a summary be included in the Friday family letter so students and families have clear expectations prior to the next discussion.
