Principal: Barker attendance initiative shows early declines in chronic absenteeism

Dr. M. Love, the district principal, told the Barker Central School District Board that attendance has improved across multiple measures, with the district seeing declines in the share of students in each absence category. "The green bar represents students with 4% absences, the yellow bar is students with 5-9% absences, and the red equates to 10% or more absences," she said, noting that 10% or more absences equals 18 or more days.
Love said Jr./Sr. High attendance showed a 4 percentage-point drop in one category year over year and that elementary data reflected larger decreases when the first 90 days of the current school year are included. She attributed the progress to targeted work by Department Teams and a district initiative focused on attendance, engagement and learning, including letters at attendance thresholds, parent calls, attendance calls, home visits and community supports aimed at addressing underlying causes.
The principal noted discipline incidents are down about 12% overall, and staff are using ACES trauma training to better identify and support students whose attendance or behavior may be affected by trauma. The Board asked for continued reporting; Dr. Love said the district will keep sharing trend data during the school year.
