Downtown group seeks permission for painted crosswalks; board approves striping contract

A representative of the Rochester Downtown Partnership design committee asked the Board of Public Works and Safety for permission to pilot painted crosswalk designs downtown and to coordinate night-time traffic closures for painting. The partnership co‑chair said the group would bring designs and logistics back to the board once the city's restriping schedule was known.
"We wanna paint crosswalks, and we wanna standard 3 d throughout, you know, Rochester downtown," the downtown co‑chair said, asking the board to consider the proposal. Public works staff cautioned that the city will restripe downtown lines and advised coordinating the painted‑crosswalk work to follow or align with that schedule.
Separately, staff presented two bids for conventional downtown striping—Air Marking at $28,030 and Accurate Striping at about $34,003.81—and recommended awarding the contract to Air Marking to restripe Main Street from 9th Street to the railroad tracks. The board approved awarding the striping work to Air Marking by voice vote.
Board members asked the partnership to return with final artwork, a proposal for work‑hours and a plan to minimize daytime lane closures; staff said they will provide the restriping schedule so the group can coordinate timing.
