County installs temporary no-parking zone at Bixby Bridge to improve emergency access

Monterey County has completed signage and will enforce a temporary no-parking zone on Highway 1 around Bixby Bridge after obtaining Caltrans approval. The pilot covers about 900 feet north and 700 feet south of the bridge and will run for 12 months.
Randy Ishee, director of Monterey County Public Works Facilities and Parks, told the county briefing that staff have implemented a temporary no-parking zone on the Caltrans-owned portion of State Route 1 at Bixby Bridge to address repeated safety and access issues.
Ishee said Caltrans approved the permit last week and county sign-shop crews completed installation of no-parking signs ahead of schedule. "The new no parking zone starts approximately 900 feet north of the Bixby Bridge and continues south to approximately 700 feet south of the Bixby Bridge," he said. Law-enforcement partners, including the California Highway Patrol, were notified so officers can enforce the restriction.
Ishee described the change as a 12-month pilot; the county previously passed an ordinance earlier this year establishing the zone, which required two readings and a statutory 30-day period before taking effect. County staff said they will analyze results over the next 12 months and adjust policy or signage as needed.
