"The local law requires that the bed tax funds received by the town be used only for the purposes of promoting and developing tourism and relative resources," the council member said, adding that prior off‑line conversations and a lack of written requests undermined transparency. Other members said they supported the 250th celebration payment in principle but wanted future requests budgeted in advance. After discussion, the board did not pass the motion related to the $1,500 item; members then approved a separate motion to pay the remaining bills.
The debate focused on statutory interpretation and good-government practices rather than the fireworks themselves. Board members said they would require a line‑item request and documentation from the Chamber in future budget cycles if bed-tax funds are to be used for similar events.
